Jesus in John’s gospel reveals his deepest identity to women: the Samaritan woman and, in today’s gospel, Martha. She knows he is the resurrection, the life, and the Christ. Yet, Martha minces no words with Jesus when she marches down the road to meet him. Their dialogue, however, is not so effective as Mary’s tears. Jesus begins to weep with her. The climax is Jesus’ powerful prayer of thanks, and his command, "Unbind Lazarus and let him go."

How has this Lent freed you to be more yourself with Jesus, whether angry or sad, hopeful or thankful? Listen to his command for you to be unbound, set free. How will you respond?

Thank you, Jesus, for the power of your word which loosens hard knots in our lives, unbinds our rigidities, sets us more and more free, day by day.
