Today Isaiah sings of God’s transformative power: “For now I create new heavens and new earth....” We also celebrate the feast of Sts. Perpetua and Felicity, two young mothers tortured and killed in third century Rome. An eyewitness recounts that the day before their martyrdom, “they had a last meal, known as the ‘free feast’ which they transformed as far as possible into an agape” (Butler’s Lives of the Saints, Liturgical Press, 1999). They had allowed God’s transformative hand to mold every aspect of their lives.
Today I pray, “Creator God, open me to transformation. Turn my encounters today with your world, your children, into an agape.”
