PRAYER / Lenten Reflection 2005Saturday, March 5, 2005 |

Beautiful images of creation are presented in scripture as gifts of God and as our Creator’s way of expressing faithful love for us. Then a gospel story of two men is presented to those who are righteous and not well liked in the community. Do I see myself like the man who boasted about his accomplishments? Do I pray in quiet for mercy because I don’t always get it right; I neglect those who need my voice to speak for them in the halls of government, I don’t bother to visit those who are lonely or in trouble, or I don’t lend a hand when it would be useful to someone else.
God of humility, help me to see myself as I truly am; humility is truth. I must not focus on how well I’m doing or consider myself better than others. Let me recognize my talents and accomplishments as gifts from God. May I also see my limitations and shortcomings as part of my life? When I become inflated with pride in my accomplishments, please be merciful and compassionate with me, O God of humility. When I fail to love you, those close to me, and my neighbors from other cultures and faiths, be merciful and compassionate toward me, O God of all Nations.
